The big challenge
At the Erbil standing ovation stage for President Barzani at the end of the campaign for YES to the referendum
23-09-2017 - Friday 22 September 2017
On the day of the Islamic calendar, the beginning of the first month of the year, the month of Muharram, the center of Erbil appears to have been depopulated; we wonder where the people we normally see are crowded, walking under the porches, getting selfie at the edge of the big fountain, in the square at the foot of the Citadel, decorated with flags "Yes Referendum”.
We find ourselves in a few minutes: as a single body, Erbil citizens, young people, the elderly and children, are heading to the '' Franso Hariri '' stadium to welcome President Masoud Barzani, when the referendum campaign for the independence from Iraq.
Along the streets the festive crowd is poured out: tattooed faces with Kurdish colors, flaming banners from car windows, chorus chants, rhythms percussion instruments, dances and smiles. Everyone is smiling, sending to us the joy of this special day.
The taxi driver confirms the general conviction of victory: "Yes, we are all for yes; even Sulaimani, a northern city that until recently was "cold" about the referendum, is now joining us. "
We got off the cab, walked to the stadium, totally involved in the procession of the thousands of people who greet us with big smiles and with the sign of victory, they just understand that we are "Press" and the Italians that the Kurds appreciate and love.
The heat is overwhelming, to which the heat of the crowd is getting more and more and that all will be able to enter the stadium.
Many are the ones who offer themselves to cooperate with us, answering our questions and helping us make our way through the slope.
"Yes Referendum, they all begin to answer us all this way, Kurdistan Region free, we want independence from Iraq, the Kurdistan region deserves to be free even after all the sacrifices made to fight the Daesh ..."
Finally, the one kilometer long flag appears, which will be able to be introduced into the kick that crowds the stadium and that throughout the evening will flourish supported by many happy Kurds to be able to testify to their own conviction that is that of their President.
It is estimated that 40,000 people are listening to President Barzani's speech, a speech that has been described as "historical" by the Kurdish press.
"We can not continue to live with Baghdad, he said, and now the referendum is out of my hands or political parties; now the referendum is in your hands, in the hands of the people of Kurdistan. "
Going back in the history of coexistence with Iraq, Balzani pointed out that ... "Iraq did not respect the partnership in the new Iraq set up after the US-led invasion in 2003, we will not return to a failed experience."
And turning to the Peshmarga, he told them they were willing to "pay any cost" needed to protect Kurdistan.
He also sent a message to Turkey and Iran: "You have punished us for 100 years. Are not you still tears? "
"If you want to resume punishing, come and punish me and let people in Kurdistan be in peace."
Reassuring the message to the Coalition and the United Nations Security Council.
Responding to a statement by the UN Security Council asking Kurdistan to postpone the vote for fear of influencing the war on ISIS and the return of a million or displaced Iraqis currently in the Kurdistan region, Barzani said that Kurdistan's coordination with Iraqi and world forces will continue.
"We will be more insistent in the fight against ISIS and fight even stronger."
