05-03-2021 - Pope Francis, the world's Catholic leader, arrived in Iraq on Friday (March 5th) at the start of a four-day trip, his most dangerous foreign trip since being elected Catholic leader in 2012.
As Pope Francis landed at Baghdad airport, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi and senior Iraqi government officials greeted the world's Catholic leader.
He was also welcomed by Iraqi President Barham Saleh at the Presidential Palace.
An Alitalia-owned plane left Rome for the Iraqi capital this morning on a four-and-a-half-hour flight from Leonardo da Vinci Airport with the Pope, his entourage, his security crew and about 75 journalists.
Iraq, meanwhile, has released thousands of additional security personnel to protect the Pope during the visit, raising concerns about the pope's life following a wave of rocket attacks and improvised explosive devices.
The 84-year-old pope is expected to visit four Iraqi cities in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region known as the city of religions and coexistence, which hosted all Iraqi and Syrian Christians in the early stages of the terrorist group, as well as Mosul, ISIL's stronghold.
Churches and buildings are still showing signs of battle.
Pope Francis will also visit the city of Ur, the birthplace of the Prophet Abraham.
Thousands of Iraqis posted videos on social media that included a request from the Pope to visit deprived areas of Iraq.
According to some Iraqis, officials will only repair roads and streets in the region if the host country is a high-ranking guest.
One of the most important milestones of this historic visit, which will take place for the first time since the establishment of the Republic of Iraq, will be the Pope's visit to the city of Najaf and his meeting with Ali Sistani, the source of Iraqi Shiite imitation.
According to world politicians, the meeting of the world's Catholic leader with Sistani, the Shiite authority, is a message that Ayatollah Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, is no longer considered the Shiite leader.
