09-11-2021 - The United States has strongly condemned the assassination attempt on Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, calling the assassination a "blatant terrorist act."
"We are relieved to learn that the Iraqi Prime Minister has not been harmed," State Department spokeswoman Ned Price said in a statement on Sunday (November 7th).  This strongly condemned terrorist act targeted the heart of the Iraqi government
"We are in close contact with the Iraqi security forces, which are responsible for maintaining the sovereignty and independence of Iraq, and we have offered to help them investigate this attack," he added.
The UN delegation in Iraq also said in a statement condemning the failed assassination of al-Kadhimi that it was "very pleased" that the Iraqi prime minister had not been harmed.
The delegation stressed that terrorism, violence and illegal actions should not be allowed to undermine the stability and security of Iraq and divert it from the democratic path. "Cowardly attacks do not help build countries"
Al-Kadhimi's residence was attacked by an explosive drone on the morning of Sunday, November 7, in the "Green Zone of Baghdad".  An attack for which no one immediately claimed responsibility, and the Prime Minister responded by calling on everyone to remain calm and restrained.
Al-Kadhimi told the Iraqi people in a video that cowardly missile and drone strikes do not help build countries.
In the video, he stressed that security forces are working to protect the country, stressing that he is in good health and unharmed.
Al-Arabiya's exclusive images show the damage done to al-Kadhimi's residence.
According to a security source, five of al-Kadhimi's bodyguards were slightly injured in the attack.
Severe political tensions: The attack comes as Iraq faces intense political tensions following the October 10 parliamentary elections.
The factions affiliated with Iran and the political forces representing the militias of the popular uprising lost the election by losing a large number of seats in parliament and did not accept the results.
The attack came as Baghdad's Green Zone witnessed demonstrations and sit-ins by supporters of Tehran-affiliated factions over the past two weeks.  These demonstrations and sit-ins have continued in the last two days.
The Green Zone of Baghdad hosts some of Iraq's official institutions and a number of consulates and embassies, including the US Embassy.
At least one protester was killed during clashes between protesters and security forces during a rally on Friday.
