Germany donates $23 million for Iraq’s children
From Rudaw English.net
20-11-2017 - ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The German government has contributed $23 million in partnership with the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to ensure Iraq’s children have access to educational services and safe drinking water.
“UNICEF is working with partners like the German government to champion the rights of Iraqi children and to ensure they have every opportunity to fulfill their potential,” said Peter Hawkins, UNICEF’s representative to Iraq, in a report released on Monday.
November 20 is the UN Universal Children’s Day, dedicated to promoting “international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children’s welfare.”
The money will enable UNICEF to provide educational services to some 265,000 children who might have missed a year or more of school.
The donation will also go towards repairing water networks in areas damaged by conflict in order to allow families to return to their homes.
Nearly 200,000 Iraqi children displaced in the past year still need humanitarian assistance.
“Children are abused, abducted, injured or even killed without a chance to escape this cycle of violence and despair on their own,” said Dr. Cyrill Nunn, German Ambassador in Iraq. “I am pleased that the German Government can support UNICEF in addressing the most urgent needs of these children, be it through protection, education or lifesaving water and sanitation.
