US soldiers killed in Afghanistan ‘insider attack’ identified

10-02-2020 - Officials on Sunday identified the two US soldiers killed in an apparent insider attack in Afghanistan.
Sgt. Javier Jaguar Gutierrez of San Antonio, Texas, and Sgt. Antonio Rey Rodriguez of Las Cruces, New Mexico, both 28, were gunned down late Saturday when a man dressed in an Afghan army uniform opened fire on a group of US and Afghan forces with a machine gun, the US Department of Defense said.
Six US troops were also wounded in the attack and were taken to a US facility for treatment.
The US troops had been meeting with Afghan army forces at a base in the eastern Nangarhar province just before shots rang out.
The foreigners started shouting,” Salim Khan, a police officer who was at his base near the scene, told The Washington Post.
Khan told the outlet the gunfire lasted just a few minutes, and the next sound he heard was from helicopters arriving to evacuate the US soldiers.
One Afghan soldier was also killed and three injured in the assault, Afghanistan’s defense ministry said.
The gunman was killed, according to Ajmal Omer, a member of Nangarhar’s provincial council.
An Afghan defense ministry official told the Associated Press the shooter was an afghan soldier and that he’d argued with the US forces before opening fire.
US military officials and the Afghan Defense Ministry haven’t officially confirmed that the attacker was an afghan soldier.
The incident remains under investigation.
Six US service members have been killed in Afghanistan since the start of 2020, including Saturday’s casualties. Last year, 22 US service personnel died in combat there.
