KRG President, PM dedicate $2.5 million to flood victims in Duhok

20-03-2020 - ERBIL, Kurdistan  Region -- President Nechirvan Barzani and Prime Minister Masour Barzani will send $2.5 million in aid to Duhok following severe floods throughout the province. 
Heavy rains in Duhok province led to powerful floods on Tuesday and Wednesday, destroying approximately 400 houses, 100 stores and 61 vehicles. 
President Barzani spoke on the phone with Duhok governor Farhat Atrushi on Thursday, discussing the damage caused in the area.  
President Barzani “expressed his condolences to the families of the two victims who died in Semel and Zakho,” according to a readout from his office, referring to the deaths of a man who drowned in Zakho and another man who was hit by lightning in Semel.  
The president has dedicated one million dinar ($834,000) as “speedy aid” to the province, it added. 
Prime Minister Barzani also released a statement, dedicating two billion dinar ($1.6 million) to the victims of the flooding in Duhok and Zakho, close to the Turkish border. 
Duhok’s Barojke neighborhood was hit particularly hard by the floods.

We thought that mountains fell on us as our houses shook,” he told Rudaw, calling on the KRG to “reach out” to those affected. 
“Our houses are destroyed and we are on the streets.” 
Civil defense units have registered the names of these people for compensation, spokesperson Bewar Abdulaziz told Rudaw. 
We will do all we can and we will raises cases with the government for compensation,” Governor Atrushi told reporters on Thursday.
