from Kuristan24
22-04-2024 - ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Prime Minister Masrour Barzani reiterated the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) unwavering commitment to media freedom during his participation in the Erbil International Summit of Journalists.
Organized by the Kurdistan Union of Journalists and the International Federation of Journalists, the event coincided with Kurdish Journalism Day and celebrated the anniversaries of the Mir Miqdad Badrkhan's Kurdistan newspaper's publication and the Kurdistan Journalists Union's establishment.

In his address to the attendees, Prime Minister Barzani emphasized the importance of media freedom in the Kurdistan Region, affirming that media work is entirely unrestricted, with the government dedicated to providing a suitable environment for journalism and freedom of expression within legal frameworks.
Acknowledging the vital role of journalists in promoting public awareness, identifying deficiencies, and supporting the reform process, Prime Minister Barzani praised the professionalism and responsibility exhibited by Kurdish journalists in fulfilling their duties.
Despite the significant strides made in media freedom, Prime Minister Barzani warned against adversaries seeking to exploit this liberty to undermine democratic principles and Kurdistan's structure. He urged journalists and media organizations to safeguard the integrity of the profession and prevent its misuse.
In response to the summit’s focus on protecting women journalists from gender discrimination, Prime Minister Barzani affirmed the KRG's readiness to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to address the challenges faced by women journalists. He pledged to take decisive action to eliminate obstacles hindering women journalists from fulfilling their professional duties.
The summit, hosted in Erbil, also saw collaboration between the Gender Committee of the International Federation of Journalists and the Kurdistan Union of Journalists, with hopes of fostering joint initiatives and projects.
As the event concluded, Prime Minister Barzani extended his congratulations on Kurdish Journalism Day and the anniversary of the Kurdistan Union of Journalists, wishing all participants success in their journalistic endeavors.

Below is the transcript of the Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister's speech:
“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Dear audience, dear guests, ladies and gentlemen,
I am pleased to be with you at this year’s international summit of journalists. I extend a warm welcome to all journalists who have gathered from around the world to participate in this summit. I wish you success and hope that the outcomes and recommendations of this gathering will contribute to the advancement of journalism.
On the occasion of Kurdish Journalism Day and the anniversary of the establishment of the Kurdistan Union of Journalists, I extend heartfelt congratulations to all Kurdish journalists and wish them success and prosperity.
The Kurdistan Regional Government has consistently respected and valued the crucial role of journalists and the journalistic profession in fulfilling their duties and conveying messages professionally and responsibly, within the bounds of applicable laws, journalistic ethics, and international standards. Particularly in promoting public awareness, correcting misconceptions, identifying deficiencies and violations, and supporting the reform process, journalists, as the fourth estate, are vital partners of governmental institutions in advancing society and the nation.
Media work is entirely unrestricted in the Kurdistan Region, and the Kurdistan Regional Government is dedicated to fostering a suitable environment for journalism and freedom of expression within legal frameworks. It is gratifying to observe that the Kurdistan Region boasts an advanced press law, contributing to the robust development of journalism and freedom of expression.
The freedom of the press in Kurdistan has reached a level where adversaries of the Kurdistan Region continually seek to exploit this rare freedom in the region to undermine democratic principles and the structure of Kurdistan. I urge journalists, unions, and journalistic organizations to prevent this important profession from being misused as a platform for abusing freedom of the press and expression.
I commend the Gender Committee of the International Federation of Journalists for selecting Erbil as the venue for this meeting. I hope this initiative will provide an opportunity for collaborative efforts and projects with the Kurdistan Union of Journalists.
Regarding the primary focus of this meeting, which is safeguarding women journalists from gender discrimination, the Kurdistan Regional Government stands ready to collaborate with the Union of Journalists and all relevant stakeholders to address the challenges and obstacles faced by women journalists, including the violence and discrimination they endure. In this regard, the government will take all necessary measures to remove impediments hindering women journalists from carrying out their professional duties.
In conclusion, I extend my congratulations on Kurdish Journalism Day and the anniversary of the establishment of the Kurdistan Union of Journalists.
Wishing you all the best of luck”.
