Empowered and Unstoppable: Kurdish Women Lead the Way
By Kamaran Aziz from Kurdistan24.net
14-04-2025 - “The KDP has truly taken ownership of the cause of Kurdistan's women—and we have capable women ready to lead and shape the future,” said Chinar Saad Abdullah and Jwan Rozhbayani

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The First Kurdistan Women's Conference, organized under the slogan “Building the Future with Our Strength,” has brought together key female political leaders and party officials in Erbil for a critical evaluation of the role, representation, and future direction of women within the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and broader governance structures in the Kurdistan Region.

Chinar Saad Abdullah, a senior member of the KDP's Central Committee and a leading figure in the party’s women-focused initiatives, outlined the ambitious scope of the conference in an exclusive interview with Kurdistan24.
“The aim of this conference is a set of important and constructive points,” she said. “We want to study the situation and position of women within the structures of the Kurdistan Democratic Party—to what extent women have been able to establish their weight and position within the organizations as an important segment of society. If they have established it, how to develop it, and if there are problems, how to solve these problems”.

Dr. Abdullah emphasized that the role of women in elections, both as voters and candidates, remains central to any functioning democratic system. "Women as voters, participants, candidates, and political representatives—how active are they in this work? How do they play their role, especially women of the Kurdistan Democratic Party?" she asked. She highlighted the unique challenges faced by female candidates, including targeted attacks and defamation via media and social platforms. "Women often become victims of media and social media during election processes, as a result of rival candidates. Therefore, the weakest segment in our society remains women."

Another core topic of the conference is the institutional performance of the Kurdistan Women's Union, a body long seen as central to women's empowerment within the KDP.
As the Kurdistan Region stands at the threshold of forming a new cabinet, Abdullah stressed that the Union must reevaluate and renew its methods. "The Union must be a school to develop women," she said.
Dr. Abdullah also underscored that this high-level conference aims to send a message to both Kurdish society and the international community. "We want to deliver the message of the Kurdistan Democratic Party that the party has its own vision regarding the issue of women in future governance."

She attributed the convening of this groundbreaking event to the firm support of President Masoud Barzani. "Although President Barzani has long supported women's issues, his endorsement of this conference is an indication that the women’s issue is moving forward. The KDP has truly made itself the owner of the issue of Kurdistan's women."

Reflecting on past progress, Abdullah pointed out that women had previously held key posts in earlier KRG cabinets, including ministerial, deputy minister, and general director roles. "In this conference, we are discussing how to increase this percentage and how our women can today be seen as skilled and capable individuals—a very important human force."

Jwan Rozhbayani, a member of the Conference's Preparatory Committee, added further detail about the goals and planning behind the event. "We want to identify the problems and issues that have accumulated within the organs of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and government foundations that have not been resolved," she told Kurdistan24.

Rozhbayani stressed that the current political climate requires adaptation. "With the advancement of the era, changes in programs and work must change according to the times," she said. "There are many women within the organs of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, but often they may not have been given the role they need to be given. We have capable women."
She outlined the meticulous planning that preceded the conference. "We started by organizing a conference at the level of Central Committee members, under the supervision of a member of the KDP Political Bureau, to identify the issues that have built up inside party and governmental structures."

According to Rozhbayani, five core themes have been developed over the past three months and are being presented in panel format over the course of five days. "Surveys, research, and interviews have been conducted, and all problems and issues have been identified. These recommendations will be prepared in the conference and directed to the organs of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, under the supervision of President Barzani. Work will be done on them."

The conference stands as a turning point for the institutional advancement of Kurdish women, seeking to transform rhetorical support into structural change. With party leadership engaged and grassroots energy mobilized, the event may set a new precedent for gender parity and progressive reform in Kurdish politics
