Iraqi jets destroy ISIS convoy near Syrian border
The convoy, armed with light and heavy weaponry as well as explosives
17-10-2016 - ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iraqi fighter jets destroyed an ISIS convoy of an estimated 45 militants in Anbar province on the Syrian border.
The Iraqi Defense Ministry said on Sunday the airstrikes were carried out after they received intelligence about movements of the convoy from the Iraqi General Directorate of Intelligence and Security.
The convoy, armed with light and heavy weaponry as well as explosives, was attempting to halt the advance of the Iraqi army in the Rawa district of Anbar province.
The Iraqi Army on October 7 deployed thousands of troops to the Syrian border to liberate al-Rutba and A’ali al-Furat which includes al-Qa’im, Anah, and Rawa. These are the last remaining territories under the control of the Islamic State in the country’s western-most and largest province.
The Iraqi army, supported by Shiite and pro-government Sunni fighters, regained Anbar’s capital city Ramadi in late 2015.
Three brigades numbering about 3,000 Iraqi soldiers, supported by tanks and artillery, have been deployed for the offensive.
