Prime Minister Barzani urges Turkey to respect will of voters, release HDP MPs
From Rudaw.net
06-11-2016 - ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The Kurdish Prime Minister has said he is “saddened” by the arrests of pro-Kurdish politicians in Turkey. Kurdish MPs in Iran have joined the condemnation of the arrests, accusing Turkey of trying to wipe out Kurdish identity in Turkey.
Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani called for “a civil and peaceful process to find a realistic solution” to the problems in Turkey, in a statement released on Saturday, the day after Turkey arrested a group of leaders and MPs from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP).
He also called on Turkey to release the detained HDP members and respect the will of the Turkish people who elected them.
“We are saddened by the arrest of the leaders and MPs of the HDP, which is a legal party in Turkey. We believe that this will complicate the situations in Turkey, which is why we call upon Turkey to release the HDP co-leaders and MPs. We hope that the situation is dealt with peacefully, and the will of the Turkish electorate who have elected these officials is respected.”
"We also call upon the HDP as a legal party in Turkey to conduct itself within the legal parameters of the country."
Representatives to the Iranian parliament from Kurdish areas of Iran have strongly condemned the arrests.
Saed Ahasan Alawi, MP to the Iranian cities of Sina, Kamyaran, and Dywandara described the arrests of the HDP co-chairs and MPs as an attempt to “purge the country’s political institutions of Kurds and wipe out the Kurdish identity in Turkey. It is to prevent the Kurds from reaching positions of power. The Turkish government must release these officials as soon as possible and must apologize to the Kurdish society in Turkey.”
Qasim Osmani, representing city of Bokan, said these arrests are “a flagrant violation of human rights and are against the principles of doing politics. We call upon Turkey not to violate the rights of the Kurds and their representatives anymore, so that there is security and stability in the country.”
Kurdish politician in Turkey, Osman Baydemir, speaking at a HDP press conference on Friday, vowed to never give up.
“This is my call to President Erdogan. Whether you detain or arrest us, even if you put us in a vice, or cut us into pieces, we will not give up on our demands for freedom as people and as loyal servants of these people, under no circumstances. We will never give up.”
Nine HDP MPs, including the two co-chairs, have been remanded in custody, three were released on bond and authorities have issued arrest warrants for another three. They are facing accusations of terrorism and suspected ties with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
