US stands by ‘friend, partner’ Turkey

06-11-2016 - ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The United States is concerned about recent events in Turkey but still believes that country to be a democracy, while Selahattin Demirtaş, co-chair of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) has been remanded in a high security institution pending investigations on terror charges.
“We still believe it to be a democracy and we have said repeatedly, certainly since the coup, that we continue to support the democratically elected institutions and Government of Turkey,” State Department spokesperson John Kirby said in a press briefing on Friday.
“At the same time, we have been very honest about expressing our concerns about some of the manners and methods in which they have” dealt with the attempted coup of July 15, he added.
He stressed that, while the United States has raised its concerns with Ankara, it would continue to work with Turkey, “They’re an ally. They’re a friend. They’re a partner.”
He declined to comment on what the arrests of the pro-Kurdish parliamentarian means for the larger Kurdish issue in Turkey, saying he was not in a position to determine that at the time.
Late on Friday, after appearing in court in Diyarbakir earlier in the day, Demirtaş was taken to the western Edirne province where he is being held at the Edirne F-Type prison, Turkey’s state media Anadolu Agency reported.
F-Type prisons are Turkey’s high security institutions imprisoning those convicted of membership in armed organizations, drug offences, and organized crime, among others.
HDP’s co-chair Figen Yüksekdaq and seven others were also remanded in custody: HDP’s parliamentary group leader Idris Baluken, Diyarbakır deputy Nursel Aydogan, Sirnak deputies Leyla Birlik and Ferhat Encu, Mardin Deputy Gulser Yildirim, and Hakkari deputies Abdullah Zeydan and Selma Irmak.
Three were released on bond: Diyarbakir deputies Ziya Pir and Imam Tascier, and Ankara deputy Sirri Sureyya Onder.
Authorities also have warrants for three others: Sirnak deputy Faysal Sariyildiz and Van deputy Tugba Hezer Ozturk who are believed to be abroad, and Hakkari deputy Nihat Akdogan.
The lawmakers are facing terror-related charges amid accusations of links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
