ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Displaced Iraqis fleeing Mosul for refugee camps in the Kurdistan Region are a potential security “threat” because they may have become radicalized after living under ISIS rule, a Peshmerga commander warned.
Arif Taifur, commander of the Peshmerga forces on the Khazir front told Rudaw that among the internally displaced persons (IDPs) arriving daily at the Hassan Sham and Khazir refugee camps he was most worried about the younger arrivals, who had been especially targeted by ISIS.
“ISIS tried a lot to target them” in an effort to convince them to join the group, Taifur said.
“There should be a force guarding the camps’ surroundings. There is no such force doing this now,” he said, adding that there is a plan underway for a force to guard the facilities.
Taifur also warned about IDPs being allowed to leave the camps and going into Kurdish cities.
“The people of Kalak, Sulaimani and even Duhok are coming to the camps to take the IDPs out of the camps,” he informed. “We are afraid that, if they are released in the streets of Erbil or Sulaimani that might create problems.”
He suggested that people who want to take the IDPs out of the camps should have a local guarantor.
More than 55,000 displaced families from Mosul have taken refuge in the Kurdistan Region since a massive military offensive to drive ISIS militants out of the city was launched on October 17, according to Iraqi and Kurdish officials.
Note: in paragraph 7,the news article had mistakenly suggested that the IDPs who wanted to leave the camps "should post bail," where in fact the official in question stated that they should have a local guarantor.
