Italian FM dismisses visa head at Erbil consulate after ‘irregularities’
From Rudaw.net-Erbil
02-03-2017 - ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The person in charge of the visa department at the Italian consulate in Erbil has been dismissed and an inspection commissioned by Italy’s Foreign Ministry has “revealed  several irregularities” regarding verifying the regularity of visa issuing procedures, the ministry stated. An Italian newspaper reported of applicants paying up to 10,000 euros for visas.
"The inspection revealed several irregularities which were punctually included in the Inspection Report submitted to the Public Prosecutor’s Office to initiate the subsequent legal steps under its competence," a statement on Tuesday from the Italian Foreign Ministry read.
It added few details but stated “the Foreign Ministry will obviously take the required administrative measures."
Visa applicants were forced to pay up to 10,000 euros for visas processing instead of the standard 90-euro fee, the Italian Corriere della Sera newspaper reported on Tuesday, citing "well-informed local sources."
The newspaper wrote that Italian investigators had found during their late-December 2016 visit that there were at least 152 cases where high-than-normal fees were demanded for visas.
“The person in charge of the Visa Department has been dismissed from office,” the foreign ministry wrote in its statement.
A person at the consulate in Erbil told Rudaw English that he was unable to comment on the issue and all inquiries on the matter are being handled by its embassy in Baghdad.
The consulate was established in August 2011 and Dr. Alessandra Di Pippo was appointed Consulate General in 2015.
The embassy referred Rudaw to Tuesday’s statement from Italy’s Foreign Ministry.
